Check Engine Light On? Let's Find Out Why.

Sam's Mobile Mechanic does check engine light diagnostics in Philadelphia, PA at your home, office, or roadside. A scan tool reads a code. A mechanic finds the actual problem.

At a glance
  • We come to you in Philadelphia and 58 nearby towns
  • Price agreed before work starts
  • Open 24 hours, 7 days a week
  • Parts and labor warranty on the work

A trouble code tells you which circuit is unhappy, not which part failed. Sam's Mobile Mechanic runs a full diagnostic scan, then tests the actual component, wiring, and fuel or vacuum system behind the code so you replace the right part the first time.

The free code read at a parts counter is a starting point, not an answer. A P0171 lean code, for example, can come from a vacuum leak, a dirty mass airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump, or a failing oxygen sensor. Buying the sensor because the code mentions it is how people spend three hundred dollars and still have the light on next week.

We pull stored and pending codes, review live data and freeze-frame information, and perform the physical tests that separate the real fault from the symptom. Then we explain, in plain English, what is wrong, what it will cost, and whether it is safe to keep driving while you decide.

What's included

  • Full OBD-II scan, stored and pending codes
  • Live data and freeze-frame review
  • Smoke, voltage, and pressure testing as needed
  • ABS, airbag, and transmission code reading
  • Diagnostic fee applied to the repair

Signs you need this service

These are the symptoms customers describe most often, and what each one usually means.

Steady check engine light
The computer stored a fault. The car is usually safe to drive, but the problem is real and will not fix itself.
Flashing check engine light
This means an active misfire dumping raw fuel into the catalytic converter. Stop driving and call us. A converter costs far more than the misfire.
Light on with no symptoms
Very common with evaporative emissions faults and loose gas caps. It still fails inspection, so it still needs a look.
Light came on then went off
The fault is intermittent and the code is likely still stored in memory. We can read history codes even after the light clears.

How we handle it on-site

Because we are mobile, the process is a little different from a shop. You tell us the year, make, model, and what the car is doing. We give you a likely diagnosis and a price range on the phone. A certified mechanic then drives to wherever the car is parked, confirms the fault with real testing, and only then does the work at the price you agreed to.

We serve Philadelphia and the surrounding region around the clock, which includes Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware, and Chester counties in Pennsylvania, South Jersey, northern Delaware, and Elkton, Maryland. Call or text (215) 384-3065 and we will tell you honestly whether this is a job we can finish at your address.

“Couldn’t say better things! My car battery died and I needed to replace it same day. They came out in 45 minutes from when I called and changed it so quickly and efficiently. Great experience! Don’t hesitate to call them!”

Anasheh SookezianGoogle review, 5 months ago

“My car hasn’t started since July 3rd and we thought it was an issue with the starter. But Sam came out and saw that it was just a dead battery and replaced it quickly. He gave great service and even gave me free windshield wipers. I’d definitely call him again”

Questions about check engine light diagnostics

Do you really come to my house or work?

Yes. That is the whole business. Sam's Mobile Mechanic is a mobile service, so a certified mechanic drives to your home, apartment lot, office parking lot, or the roadside with the tools and parts to do the job there. You do not drop the car off and you do not wait in a lobby.

How much do you charge?

You get a price before any work begins. We quote the repair once we know what is actually wrong, and that number is what you pay. No hidden shop fees, no surprise add-ons at the end.

What kind of repairs can you do on-site?

Most of them. Brakes, batteries, alternators, starters, spark plugs and coils, oil and fluid services, AC work, sensors, belts, hoses, thermostats, diagnostics, and full maintenance are all routine at your location. Jobs that genuinely need a lift, a press, or machine work are the exceptions, and we tell you straight when that is the case.

Do you charge for diagnostics?

There is a diagnostic fee when a fault needs real testing rather than a quick look, and we apply it to the repair if you have us do the work. We tell you the fee before we come out.

What areas do you serve?

Philadelphia and the surrounding region, including Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware, and Chester counties in Pennsylvania, South Jersey from Camden down through Gloucester and Burlington counties, northern Delaware, and Elkton in Maryland. There are individual pages for every city we cover on this site.
